Powder Flow Property Testing

Shear Cell Tester

Fundamental Bulk Solids Flow Properties

  • Cohesive strength - used to calculate hopper outlet dimensions that prevent obstructions to flow.
  • Internal friction - a measurement of inter-particle friction.
  • Compressibility - bulk density/solids stress relationship.
  • Wall friction - used to determine recommended hopper angles for mass flow and transfer chute angles.
  • Permeability - used to determine hopper outlet size that allows desired solids discharge rate.
  • DEM (Discrete Element Method) calibration - useful for chute and mixer design.

Example Test Report

Analysis

  • Critical hopper outlet dimensions.
  • Recommended mass flow hopper angles.
  • Limiting solids discharge rates.
  • Sample test and recommendations report can be found on Downloads page.

Have your own RST, PFT, or FT4?

Let me tell you what inputs to use to get the most useful data or let me analyze your test results following Andrew Jenike's analyses (and a couple of my own).

Some testers have their own hopper design modules but don't trust them!  Contact me  if you'd like me to send you the same computer tools that I use.

And if you are considering purchasing a shear cell tester, please contact me for an unbiased opinion of which one to procure  (I've used most of them) and recommendations for other powder testing equipment.
